St. Vincent's Hospital

The site’s afterlife is as significant as the infrastructure once hidden beneath it. The NYC AIDS Memorial Park at St. Vincent’s Triangle now occupies the former Materials Handling Facility site. Tunnels beneath Seventh Avenue once connected the facility to the hospital campus, carrying supplies and, during the AIDS crisis, the bodies of patients who died at St. Vincent’s. Today the memorial honors the more than 100,000 New Yorkers lost to AIDS and recognizes the caregivers and activists who responded to the epidemic. This later history is secure; Joseph’s specific 1977 project remains unresolved because available sources place the completed facility closer to 1980.

Contemporary 1976–77 records describe a proposed underground warehouse and tunnel beneath the Triangle Site. Later records show the completed Materials Handling Facility around 1980 or later, so the facility is essential site history but cannot currently be identified as Joseph's 1977 job. The project remains unresolved.

The former St. Vincent's campus has been extensively redeveloped for residential and other uses; the hospital no longer operates there.
