The exact project or site has not yet been identified.
A sludge thickener does an essential but nearly invisible job: it lets solids settle and sheds water before the material enters heated, oxygen-poor digesters, where microbes turn part of it into biogas. New York was expanding and upgrading wastewater treatment in the 1970s, including the Newtown Creek system. The photograph explains the process, but the exact plant in Rita's 1979 entry remains unresolved.
