“Port Authority Bus Terminal — 1977”
The North Wing construction began in 1975, was underway in 1977, and increased bus-terminal capacity by about 50 percent. Its diagonal steel trusses became one of the most recognizable — and controversial — façades in Midtown.
A complete New York lifecycle: old terminal → Joseph's expansion → disliked but familiar city fabric → planned demolition → another new terminal.
What Kelly did here
Family source
Strong
Most likely CMU/concrete-block interior and service-wall masonry in the North Wing expansion; exterior structure was heavily steel-framed, so exact package still needs trade records.
This scope is recorded as strong, not documented. It is a disciplined reading of the building and the trade practice of the period, not a contract-level record of Kelly’s work.
