The College of Insurance, 101 Murray Street

Joseph helped build the insurance industry's purpose-built college — and thirty years later the entire school building was demolished for a luxury condo tower.

As written

College of Insurance — 1983

The College of Insurance's ten-story Murray Street building contained classrooms, conference rooms, computer labs, a cafeteria, residences and a major insurance library.

Why it matters

A remarkably complete city-cycle card: an institution finally gets the building it always wanted, uses it for only a few decades, and the land becomes more valuable than the building.

Scope confidence

Probable

Likely: likely concealed CMU/block backup, shafts, stair/service/fire-rated walls and localized masonry—not the principal visible exterior, which the AIA Guide describes as pink precast panels.

This scope is recorded as probable, not documented. It is a disciplined reading of the building and the trade practice of the period, not a contract-level record of Kelly’s work.
